I could be having the most TERRIBLE day... and all I have to do is go to the record player, put on Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" album. The very first song that starts playing is "Second Hand News", which instantly brings a smile to my face. I don't know if it's because a friend and I have inside jokes regarding the "Rumours" album itself, or if it's the part where he starts singing "Down down down down de do down." Whatever it is, that is my happy song and it is the song that I can count on to brighten any mood.

Instantly I would have to say Maynard James Keenan. But he’s probably a real asshole.
So, I think Marilyn Manson would be AMAZING to hang out with for a day.

When I was in elementary school, I was asked the ultimate question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Well, for most children, it's as easy as "veterinarian" or "marine biologist." No, I never wanted to be those things.. My teacher asked me many, many times.. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Little did she know, that once upon a time, I wanted to be a ballerina.. that was until my grandmother got me tap dancing shoes for my birthday when I asked for ballet slippers and that dream was crushed. While all this was running through my mind, she asked me a final time, "Candace, you can be ANYTHING you want to be, anything in the world.. What do you want to be?"

"Anything, really? Then I'll be a fire hydrant!" I told her with conviction.

Hey... she said I could be ANYTHING I wanted, right? Needless to say, I never became an actual fire hydrant.. I may feel that I have become one metaphorically, but I never did accomplish that goal.

A Hard Lesson

For Ed Griffin, heartbreak hit April 25.

That’s when he and his wife, Diane, got word their 20-year-old grandson, a smart, good-hearted guy who was devoted to his 3-year-old daughter, was dead of what they believe was an apparent heroin overdose. Cause of death is pending a ruling by the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s office.

Homeless, Bruce Alan Shertenlieb was living in a car, which belonged to the father of his 18-year-old girlfriend. When she went inside, he stayed outside in the car parked in the driveway of the Bethel home. Police said the girlfriend was misleading her own parents about Shertenlieb’s whereabouts.

Shertenlieb, who had his share of troubles, including unemployment and an involuntary crisis hospitalization, had been living with his grandparents in Trainer. When he started stealing their money, they said they had no choice but to ask him to leave their Post Road residence.

When he was living in Trainer, Diane Griffin said she never snooped. Three days after he moved out, she said she said decided to go through the trash. She found 24 heroin bags.

“I knew he was on drugs, but I didn’t know it was heroin,” Ed Griffin said.

Ed Griffin was planning to confront his grandson, face to face.

“I never had the chance,” he said.

The Sunday Shertenlieb died, he was supposed to be going to West Chester to talk to his uncle about living there with him, Ed Griffin said.

Bethel Police Detective Robert Balchunis said his investigation revealed Shertenlieb purchased 15 bags of heroin for $100 in Philadelphia two days prior, a Friday. The dealer was late, so he supposedly threw Shertenlieb an extra bag.

Balchunis said it’s his understanding the parents of the girlfriend found out Shertenlieb was living in the car in their driveway early Sunday morning, and immediately spoke to their daughter about it. They also made her take an at-home drug test, he said.

“She used the house phone to call him on her cell phone, which Bruce Alan was using because his was dead,” Balchunis said.

She told him he had to leave.

“Oh great, now I don’t have any place to live,” Shertenlieb reportedly told his girlfriend.

Balchunis said the girlfriend mentioned something about them going to West Chester that afternoon. She had driven the car out of the driveway and onto Garnet Mine Road, when she reached behind and realized Shertenlieb wasn’t moving.

Police found needles in the overhead compartment of the car and all but one unopened bag of heroin under the ashtray. The blue bags were stamped, “The Best.”

When arrangements were being made for Bruce Alan Shertenlieb’s funeral, Ed Griffin had strong feelings about how it should be handled.

“I pushed for an open casket,” he said. “I wanted all the young kids to see him. Some of those kids were the very same who told me they knew he was on heroin, but it wasn’t a big deal because he wasn’t shooting it.”

Ed Griffin did not know until Sunday that needles were found in the car.

Every morning I wake up I feel my life has purpose. I am a mother, soon-to-be wife, and an elementary teaching assistant. My whole life revolves around educating. Whether it's teaching second graders how to tell time, teaching my 2 year old his ABC's or teaching my dog to use the bathroom outside.. I am constantly educating. I feel as though my time here has had a lasting impact. I think it will take on the form of graduating students remembering when Miss. Profitt helped them in elementary school. It will take on the form of appreciation on Mother's Day, Birthdays and whenever Connor says "Thank you, mom."

I have only lived on my own for 3 years now. We usually start puting the decorations up the day after Thanksgiving. They stay up until New Year's Day. When I lived at home, my parents didn't decorate or put the tree up until a week before Xmas, then they would take it down New Year's Day.. 1 week, that's it. It's hard for me because I love Halloween so much that I just want to keep it up all of November, but I eventually get over it and put the Xmas stuff up.

Well, that depends. If you consider occasional babysitting a job, then that's what I did first for money. Then I worked under the table for a few years at The Willowbrook Pub. I started out washing dishes for $4/hour. Then I moved over to cooking for $6/hour. When I turned 17, they allowed me to waitress for a few nights. By then, I was making quite a bit of money. The place went under new management and they basically fired the bulk of us because they wanted to bring in their own people.

From there I had my first "official" on the books job in the Cafe at Wal Mart. I really didn't mind that job, but the people I worked with were a mess. I worked with 3 other women. One didn't want to do anything because she was pregnant. The other didn't want to do anything because she was too old. And the third was our manager, and she never lifted a finger. They always said I could do all the work because I'm not pregnant or old.. Haha, no.

A purchase order was sent back from the Education Center today. The reason was because they wanted a teacher here, Bill Smerigan, to elaborate on the reason he needed Lysol Aerosol Spray and Performance Plus Duct Tape. This is what he put:

"Lysol 1902 Aerosol. Hospital disinfectant/deodorant is highly effective against TB, MRSA and HIV-1 (AIDS virus). Virusidal, fungicidal, bactericidal. Prevents odors and growth of mold and mildew. EPA Registered. Etc.."

And my favorite:
